SLA housing for a handheld diagnostic device
A painted, drop-tested housing for a user trial — internal ribs at 0.8 mm, four units in 4 days.
What made this part difficult
The device team needed four housings for a usability trial before the injection mould was cut. The housing had 0.8 mm internal ribs, a recessed display window and a painted outer surface that had to match the production colour. Machining was ruled out by the internal geometry; a mould was eight weeks away.
Three changes that made it repeatable
- 01
Printed in a PC-like SLA resin at 0.05 mm layers, oriented so the cosmetic face carried no support marks and the ribs ran in the stronger direction.
- 02
Trial-fitted the PCB, gasket and display window before finishing, then adjusted two boss heights by 0.2 mm in the second build.
- 03
Primed, painted to the customer’s RAL reference and clear-coated, with the paint build kept under 60 µm so the display window still seated.
Measured, not claimed

on the PCB mounting bosses — enough for a repeatable board fit.
internal rib thickness printed without a support mark on the outer face.
Measured on a calibrated CMM at 20 °C. The inspection report shipped with the parts.
